Some people think you need one hosting plan if you run an online business and another if you want to set up personal sites. It doesn’t matter if you want to have a website for personal or business reasons, for all your online needs you can use one website hosting plan and save in both time and money. But when you do choose your plan, there are five important facts that you need to know about website hosting.
Fact #1 – Just because you buy a domain, it doesn’t always mean you own it outright. Never under any circumstances get your domain name through the company. If you do that, you’re asking for future headaches. Ever hear that possession is nine-tenths of the law? Whoever possesses the domain name owns it.
Then you’ll have to buy it from your website hosting company when the two of you part ways and you’re at their mercy as to what the cost will be to you. Better to get your domain first and then get your hosting. Even if you decide that having an online business isn’t for you, you can sell the domain name and make some (if not all) your money back but you can’t sell what you don’t own.
Fact #2 – Your website hosting company should not charge you any additional fees. You should know up front what you have to pay when you sign up. In those monthly or yearly (however you decide to pay it) fees, you should not be charged anything extra for needing to contact customer service with any questions. Free customer service support is standard with most companies. Even the cheaper companies offer some kind of free support.
Fact #3 – Some website hosting companies require you to sign up online by agreeing to a terms of service contract. Find out what’s required of you before you agree to sign up with the website hosting company. You want to read that carefully to make sure that you’re not tied into a contract with a website hosting business forever. Make sure that you’re aware of any clauses in the agreement that describe any termination fees. You’ll want to know this in case you decide to switch companies.
Fact #4 – Not all companies allow you to create a unique website! Make sure that you can make any changes to the website’s design. If you don’t like your website hosting company’s pre-selected templates, make sure that you have the option to customize it.
Fact #5 – Some companies can be stingy with their available website space. Look into how much room you’re going to have for your website when you first sign up for website hosting. To have less room on a small personal or online business website might not matter much to you in the beginning but as your personal or business needs expand, it will matter. Always buy with an eye toward what your company can be and not what it is.
